Ever heard of the Bernedoodle? It is a breed belonging to this day of Designer Dog, dominated by breeds such as Pomskies and Yorkie Poos.  Regardless of the vast number of designer breeds, nobody can dethrone Doodles: Poodle crossbreeds. Somewhere among the oodles of doodle breeds, the Bernedoodle is pawing its way up the popularity poll.

We’ve seen the Australian Labradoodle, the Mini Aussie Doodle, and of course, the beloved Golden Doodles. Enter now, the Bernedoodle: a dog with the most amazing make-up of equal parts brains and ditz.

What Is A Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is a result of breeding Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodles. In the same way that people love the traits which Golden Retrievers or Labrador Retrievers bring to mixed breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog brings a ton of fun, love and goofy charm to the mix.

The Bernese – Poodle mix breed is guaranteed to bring endless joy and the most loyal companionship to anyone. Whether you are single or have a family with children, it just takes one Bernedoodle to form a tribe.

5 Facts You Need To Know About the Bernedoodle

  1. The curlier the coat of a Bernedoodle pup, the less they shed! This is very good news for people with allergies, because who doesn’t love a hypoallergenic dog?
  2. There is no health guarantee, but Bernedoodles tend to have less congenital health problems.
  3. Swissridge Bernedoodles were [allegedly] the first dogs who were bred intentionally at Swissridge Kennels in 2003.
  4. Bernedoodles were bred for companionship, not shows.
  5. Bernedoodles are very intelligent and need to be socialized and trained from a young age.

Appearance and Personality of the Goofy Bernedoodle

You might think that breeding a smaller version on a Bernese Mountain Dog will result in a dog looking something like an Entlebucher Mountain Dog, (basically a smaller, short-haired version of the Bernese Mountain Dog), but hold your horses. Where there is a poodle, there are all sorts of room for variety.

The Bernedoodle Breed comes in 3 different sizes:

  • Tiny Bernedoodles (aka Micro Bernedoodles)
  • Miniature Bernedoodles (aka Mini Bernedoodles)
  • Standard Bernedoodles

The size of the Bernedoodle puppy will depend on the size of the Poodle parent. A Toy Poodle is a very small dog. Breeding Toy Poodles with Bernese Mountain Dogs will more likely (but not definitely) result in smaller Bernedoodle pups. When it comes to gender, male Bernedoodles tend to be bigger than females.

The coat of a Bernedoodle puppy in upcoming litters is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get! The coats of the breed can be curly, wavy or straight, looking more like that of the Poodle’s, or the Bernese parent’s coat.

Bernedoodle Colors!

A Bernedoodle puppy can have solid coloring, or have a combination of 2 or three different colors.

The most popular coloration of the Bernedoodle is that which resembles the Bernese Mountain Dogs. The Puppy can, however, look more like the Poodle parent.

There is a gene which can be inherited from Poodles, which is called the fading gene. It causes the color of a dog’s coat to get lighter as they age. People could start out with sable or tan dogs, and end up with dogs looking more like Golden Doodles than anything else!

The colors of Bernedoodles are:

  • Black
  • White
  • Blue
  • Silver
  • Sable

Temperament of Bernedoodles

Whether a Mini Bernedoodle or a Standard pooch! These doggos are clever and quirky and love nothing more than to be part of the pack. Bernedoodles are great with children and are quick learners when it comes to training. They really don’t like to be left alone, and love to play as much as they love to cuddle.

Whether you are dealing with a standard, tiny or mini Bernedoodle, a Bernedoodle puppy often inherited some Bernese Mountain Dog stubbornness.
